15,000 years ago, the weight of a mile and a half high glacier crushed Vermont as it receded to the north. The North Atlantic rushed in. What was once called the Vermont Sea had whales swimming about. In 1849 linemen digging the rail-bed from Rutland to Burlington, VT discovered the 10,000 year old skeletal remains of a Beluga whale in Charlotte, VT.  These can be found along Interstate 89 about 5 miles south of Burlington in a field known as Industrial Park.
